There are a number of expanders, including saggital expanders and Alf appliances that can be effective during the interceptive orthodontic phase. These expanders are custom-made removable appliances. They can be used to address many issues in conjunction with the above treatment options. They are very effective in assisting normal growth of the child to develop the upper jaw and mid face.
One condition that may benefit from early treatment is severe crowding. This occurs when the jaws are too small to accommodate all of the permanent teeth. Palatal expansion may be recommended at this point, to help the adult teeth erupt (emerge from below the gums) properly. Even if braces are required later, the treatment time will likely be shorter and less complicated.
